Jag minns inte exakt varför, men en dag 1999 tog Johan Wikberg och jag tåget till Gävle, och hamnade så småningom på en skivbutik som jag tror heter Petter & Lottas. Ägaren, en norsk herre, hade en skokartong bakom disken med en bunt av Eugene Chadbournes egenpaketerade lofi-kassetter (en av dem låg i en kartong som tidigare innehållet Taboule Wheat Mix, en annan i en plastpåse tillsammans med röda stearinrester). Chadbourne hade varit i Gävle några år tidigare och spelat Phil Ochs-låtar för barnen på torget, berättade skivaffärsmannen. Jag köpte kassetterna – och så denna dubbel-LP med Lol Coxhill. Coxhill och Chadbourne: två musiker vars konstnärskap är integrerade i deras liv, och vice versa – avantgardism, inte som en pose eller en marknadsföringsstrategi, utan som ett sätt att vara, ett sätt att leva, ständigt skapande, öppna för intryck, nära sin publik. Inte idoler att se upp till, utan estetiska/politiska föredömen: konsten kan transformera även din vardag och du kan transformera din vardag till konst.
Nu ska sägas att Ear of the Beholder långtifrån är Coxhills bästa eller mest representativa skiva, men den är utan tvekan hans mest kända, och den grundmurade hans rykte som improvisationsmusikens lustifika mysfarbror, mycket tack vare sammankopplingen med John Peel, som gjorde denna inspelning möjlig och gav ut den på sitt eget skivbolag. Coxhill kan därmed synas inordna sig i samma tradition av brittisk excentricitet som Ivor Cutler eller Ron Geesin, men hans hjärta har alltid funnits hos jazzen och den improviserade musiken. Någon jazzsnobb kan han dock inte beskyllas för att vara; hans gästspelande med punkbandet The Damned i slutet av 70-talet är välkänt (Coxhill kommenterade att publiken loskade lika mycket på honom som på Captain Sensible) och länge uppträdde han regelbundet som gatumusikant i London. Några exempel på det finns här på Ear of the Beholder och de hör till de mest minnesvärda på skivan: Coxhills underfundiga sopransaxofon slingrar sig över sorlet på gångbron vid Charing Cross järnvägsstation, eller över trafikbullret vid Piccadilly. Och några solovariationer kring ”Loverman” och en känslig version av Jobims ”Insensatez” visar att han kunde spela standardlåtar oklanderligt.
I övrigt är detta en rätt rörig blandning, charmig och ojämn. Coxhill småpratar med ungar på stan, låter några flickor sjunga ”I Am the Walrus” och skojsjunger några 30-talsdängor ackompanjerad av David Bedford på piano. En 20 minuter lång improvisation med holländska musiker i Utrecht är så illa inspelad att det är svårt att avgöra vad som egentligen händer. Musik av dagbokskaraktär: allt ska med. Den bästa recensionen av Ear of the Beholder levererar Coxhill själv i början av skivan: ”Some of the pieces I really like, other pieces I quite like, and I don’t hate any of it”.

Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said ”You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
Yesterday, while I was at work, my cousin stole my apple ipad and tested to see if it can survive a twenty five foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My iPad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this is totally off topic but I had to share it with someone!
I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the page layout of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 images. Maybe you could space it out better?
